About Livorno
Livorno is a port city on the Ligurian Sea on the west coast of Tuscany, Italy. It is the capital of the province of Livorno, with 158,493 inhabitants as of December 2017. In English, it is traditionally called Leghorn.
During the Renaissance, Livorno was designed as an "ideal city". According to the wishes of the Medici family, Livorno developed significantly from the second half of the 16th century as an important free port, leading to intense commercial activity, mainly by foreign traders and the seat of consulates and shipping companies, becoming the most important port city of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The multi-ethnic and multicultural status of Livorno lasted until the second half of the 19th century. However, remnants of this period can still be seen in the city's churches, villas and palaces.
Livorno is considered the most modern of all Tuscan cities and is the third most populous city in Tuscany, after Florence and Prato.
