About San Marino
San Marino, officially the Republic of San Marino, also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino (Italian: Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino), is a microstate located in southern Europe, surrounded by Italy. Located on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains, San Marino has a land area of just over 61 square kilometers and a population of 33,562 people.
San Marino is a landlocked country, but its northeastern end is just 10 kilometers from the Italian city of Rimini on the Adriatic Sea. The nearest airport - Federico Fellini International Airport (RMI) - is also in Italy. The country's capital, San Marino, is located on the top of the Mount Titan, while the largest settlement is Dogana. The official language of San Marino is Italian. The country takes its name from St. Marinus, a stonemason from the then Roman island of Rab in present-day Croatia. Born in AD 275, Marinus was involved in rebuilding the walls of Rimini after it was destroyed by Libenian pirates. In 301 AD, Marinus established an independently governed monastic community on Mount Titan; as such, San Marino claims to be the oldest existing sovereign state and the oldest constitutional republic.
The country's economy is dominated by finance, industry, services and tourism. It is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of GDP per capita, with figures comparable to the most developed regions in Europe.
