About Rimini
Rimini is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy and the capital of the province of Rimini. It stretches along the Adriatic Sea, on the coast between the rivers Marecchia (ancient Ariminus) and Ausa (ancient Aprusa). It is one of the most famous seaside resorts in Europe, and its revenue comes from domestic and international tourism, which forms an important part of the city's economy. It is also near San Marino, a small country within Italy. The first bathhouse opened in 1843. Rimini is a city of art with Roman and Renaissance monuments and the birthplace of film director Federico Fellini.
The city was founded in 268 BC by the Romans. In Roman times, Rimini was an important transportation link between the north and south of the peninsula. On this land, Roman emperors erected monuments such as the Arch of Augustus and the Bridge of Tiberius. During the Renaissance, the city benefited from the court of Palazzo Malatesta, which hosted artists such as Leonardo da Vinci.
In the 19th century, Rimini was one of the most active cities on the revolutionary front and hosted many campaigns for Italian unification. During World War II, the city saw numerous clashes and bombings, but also fierce partisan resistance, which earned it the honor of the Civic Courage Gold Medal. In recent years it has become one of the most important trade fairs and conference venues in Italy.
As of December 31, 2019, Rimini had a population of 151,200, of which about 325,000 lived in the province of the same name, making it the 28th largest city in Italy.
