Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a ride?

We recommend booking your transfer or hourly hire service at least 72 hours in advance. If you don’t have that much time, you can request an urgent transfer — we’ll let you know as soon as possible whether we can confirm it.

What pick-up time should I specify for the transfer?

If your transfer starts from an airport or railway station, please specify your flight or train arrival time as the start of your transfer. This helps the driver organize the meeting more accurately.

If your transfer starts from a hotel to an airport, please indicate the time you wish to be picked up at reception. You’ll need to calculate it yourself, allowing extra time for check-in. We recommend adding about 3 hours before your flight’s departure. For example, if your flight leaves at 14:00 and the trip takes 1 hour, your pick-up time should be 10:00.

How do I know if my order has been accepted?

After submitting your booking, you’ll receive an email with all trip details and your order status as “Waiting”. Once we receive and confirm your payment, the status will change to “Accepted”, and you’ll receive another email confirmation.

If you don’t receive the confirmation email, please contact our support team at office@welcome.taxi.

How do I change my booking?

To make changes to your booking, please contact our support team at office@welcome.taxi.

Important note: Requests for changes made less than 72 hours before your trip may be declined.

How can I cancel my booking?

You can cancel your booking in two ways:

  1. Via the booking page on our website — use the cancellation number provided in your booking voucher, at least 72 hours before the trip.
  2. By contacting our support team if it’s less than 72 hours before your ride.
Important note: In case of urgent cancellation, we may not be able to refund your deposit. The free cancellation period is stated in your confirmation email.
What should I do if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is delayed by less than 30 minutes, the driver will adjust their arrival time automatically.

If the delay is longer, please inform the driver directly (their phone number is in your confirmation voucher) or contact WelcomeTaxi Customer Support at office@welcome.taxi. Please include your order number and the new arrival time.

Important note: The driver may charge an additional fee for extended waiting time.

How will I find my driver?

For airport transfers, if you’ve added the meet-and-greet option to your order, the driver will meet you in the arrivals area — right after passport control and baggage claim. You’ll see a name sign with your first and last names (or custom text, if specified in your booking).

Important note: We strongly recommend adding the meet-and-greet option to your airport transfer booking.

For hotel pickups, the driver will wait for you in the hotel lobby. Detailed meeting instructions and your driver’s contact number are provided in your booking confirmation voucher.

How can I be sure that my driver will pick me up?

WelcomeTaxi guarantees that your driver will do their best to meet you on time.

Both you and the driver will have each other’s phone or WhatsApp number. Please keep your mobile phone switched on at the time of pickup. If you can’t reach the driver, contact our support team immediately.

I can’t find my driver. What should I do?

If you can’t find your driver, please double-check the name signs again — the driver may have missed you in the crowd.

Try calling or messaging the driver via WhatsApp. If there’s no response within the meeting time, contact our support team.

If necessary, go to the airport’s Information Desk to arrange a local taxi to your destination.

Important note: If the driver fails to meet you, we will refund your payment.

Private Transfers from Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP)

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), also known as Puerto Plata Airport, serves the northern coast of the Dominican Republic and is one of the country’s most important tourism gateways. Located near Puerto Plata, the airport provides access to popular destinations such as Sosúa, Cabarete, Cofresí, Río San Juan, and other beach resorts along the Atlantic coastline.

The airport handles international flights from North America and Europe, especially during the winter tourism season when travelers arrive for beach holidays, surfing, diving, and all-inclusive resorts. For many visitors, arranging reliable transportation from the airport is an essential part of planning a smooth arrival in the Dominican Republic.

WelcomeTaxi offers private airport transfers, chauffeur service, and regional long-distance transportation from POP with professional English-speaking drivers and pre-booked fixed pricing.

Transportation Options from Puerto Plata Airport

Travelers arriving at POP have several transportation options depending on budget, destination, and travel preferences.

Local Taxis

Taxis are available outside the airport terminal and provide direct transportation to nearby hotels and resorts. However, taxi pricing in the Dominican Republic is often negotiated rather than metered, and rates can vary significantly depending on the driver, arrival time, and passenger demand.

For visitors unfamiliar with local pricing, language barriers and unclear fares may create uncertainty after a long international flight.

Shared Shuttle Services

Some resorts and tour operators offer shared shuttle transportation from Puerto Plata Airport. While these services can reduce costs, they often involve waiting for other passengers, multiple hotel stops, and limited flexibility.

Shared transportation may be practical for travelers staying at large resorts but is usually less convenient for private villas, apartments, surf camps, or regional travel.

Car Rental

Rental cars are available at the airport through international and local providers. Driving in the Dominican Republic can be manageable for experienced drivers, but road conditions, local driving habits, and navigation outside tourist areas may be challenging for first-time visitors.

Parking availability may also vary depending on the destination.

Private Airport Transfers

Private airport transfers are one of the most comfortable and efficient ways to travel from POP. A pre-booked transfer provides direct transportation, fixed pricing, luggage assistance, and a professional driver waiting upon arrival.

WelcomeTaxi specializes in private transportation services tailored for international travelers who prefer predictable service standards and reliable communication in English.

Airport Transfers to Puerto Plata, Sosúa, and Cabarete

Most travelers arriving at POP continue to nearby coastal destinations.

Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata itself is located approximately 20 kilometers from the airport. The city is known for its beaches, colonial architecture, resorts, cruise port, and attractions such as Mount Isabel de Torres and Ocean World.

A private transfer from POP to Puerto Plata is usually the fastest and simplest option, especially for families, couples, and travelers with luggage.

Sosúa

Sosúa is one of the closest resort areas to the airport and is especially popular among beach travelers, divers, and international visitors staying in villas or apartments.

Because many accommodations in Sosúa are smaller boutique hotels or private rentals, pre-arranged transportation can be more convenient than searching for taxis after arrival.

Cabarete

Cabarete is internationally known for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and beach nightlife. The town attracts surfers, digital nomads, and long-stay visitors from around the world.

Private transfers from Puerto Plata Airport to Cabarete are common due to the direct coastal route and the large amount of sports equipment many travelers carry.

Long-Distance Transfers Across the Dominican Republic

While POP mainly serves the northern coast, many travelers continue to other parts of the Dominican Republic by road.

WelcomeTaxi provides long-distance private transfers between airports, cities, and resort regions throughout the country.

Popular long-distance routes include:

  • Puerto Plata to Punta Cana
  • Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo
  • Puerto Plata to Santiago de los Caballeros
  • Puerto Plata to Samaná
  • Puerto Plata to La Romana

Long-distance chauffeur transportation can be especially useful for travelers who want to avoid domestic flights, bus transfers, or complicated public transportation connections.

Chauffeur Service in the Dominican Republic

In addition to airport transfers, chauffeur services are increasingly popular among international travelers visiting the Dominican Republic for business trips, weddings, luxury vacations, and private tours.

Professional chauffeur service offers additional comfort, flexibility, and privacy compared to standard taxi transportation.

Services may include:

  • point-to-point transportation,
  • hourly chauffeur hire,
  • intercity travel,
  • resort transportation,
  • business transportation,
  • private sightseeing transfers.

English-speaking drivers are particularly important for international visitors who may need assistance with communication, local logistics, or hotel coordination.

Why Pre-Booked Transfers Are Often Better Than Airport Taxis

Many travelers arriving at POP prefer pre-booked transportation for several practical reasons.

Fixed Pricing

With a private transfer, the price is agreed in advance. Travelers avoid fare negotiations, unexpected surcharges, or confusion about payment methods.

Flight Monitoring

Professional transfer services typically monitor flight arrivals and adjust pickup timing if the flight is delayed.

Meet and Greet Service

Drivers can meet passengers directly at the airport arrival area, which is especially useful for first-time visitors to the Dominican Republic.

Comfort and Vehicle Choice

Pre-booked services allow travelers to choose vehicle categories based on group size and luggage requirements, including sedans, SUVs, vans, and minibuses.

Reliable Long-Distance Travel

For regional transfers across the Dominican Republic, private transportation is often more comfortable and safer than combining buses, taxis, and local transport connections.

Local Transportation Specifics in Puerto Plata

Travel conditions in the Dominican Republic differ from those in Europe or North America. Traffic rules may be applied less strictly, and road signage outside major cities can sometimes be limited.

Motorcycles and scooters are extremely common, and driving styles may appear unpredictable to foreign visitors.

Travelers should also be aware that:

  • cash payments are still widely used,
  • some smaller hotels may be difficult to locate without local knowledge,
  • mobile internet coverage can vary in remote coastal areas,
  • ride-hailing coverage is limited outside major urban centers.

Because of these factors, many international travelers prefer arranging transportation before arrival.

Traveling Between Airports in the Dominican Republic

Some visitors arrive through one airport and depart from another depending on flight availability and travel itineraries.

Private airport-to-airport transfers are available between:

  • POP and STI
  • POP and SDQ
  • POP and PUJ
  • POP and AZS

These routes are frequently used by travelers combining beach destinations, cruises, or multi-city vacations.

Travel Tips for Visitors Arriving at POP

When planning transportation from Puerto Plata Airport, travelers should consider several practical factors:

  • Confirm the exact hotel or villa address before arrival.
  • Allow additional travel time during weekends and holiday periods.
  • Choose larger vehicles when traveling with surfboards, golf bags, or multiple suitcases.
  • Keep some local currency available for small purchases or tips.
  • Book airport transportation in advance during high tourism seasons.

The Dominican Republic remains one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations, and reliable airport transportation helps ensure a smoother and more comfortable travel experience from the moment of arrival.

WelcomeTaxi provides private transfers and chauffeur services from Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) for individuals, families, business travelers, and groups traveling throughout Puerto Plata and the Dominican Republic.
