About Bari

Bari is the capital of the Bari Metropolitan City and Apulia region on the Adriatic Sea in Southern Italy. After Naples, it is the second most important economic center on the continental part of Southern Italy. It is a port and university town, as well as the city of St. Nicholas. The city itself has 315,284 inhabitants in an area of 116 square kilometers, while the urban area has 750,000 inhabitants. The metropolitan area has 1.3 million residents.

Bari is made up of four distinct districts. To the north is the densely populated old town on the peninsula, between two modern ports, with the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the Cathedral of St. Sabino (1035-1171) and the Hohenstaufen Castle built for Frederick II. It is now also a major nightlife area. To the south is the Murat district (built by Joachim Murat), the modern heart of the city, laid out on a rectangular plan with the seaside promenade and the main shopping areas (Via Sparano and Via Argiro).

Modern residential areas around Bari city centre were built in the 1960s and 1970s to replace the older suburbs that developed along streets extending out from the city wall gates. In addition, the surrounding area developed rapidly in the 1990s. The city has a redeveloped airport, Karol Wojtyla Airport, which is connected to several European cities.

How to get from Bari to Karol Wojtyła Airport

Train or Subway

You can quickly reach Bari Airport from Bari city centre by public transport. To get to the airport, from Bari Centrale railway station you can take the train called Ferrovia Regionale (FR2, grey) or the subway called Ferrovia Metropolitana (FM2, yellow). Travel time to Bari Airport is 16-20 minutes. Trains to the airport run two to four times an hour. Single one-way ticket costs EUR 5.10. Tickets can be bought at ticket machines at Bari Centrale train station. The trains are unavailable in the night.

Bus

Bus No. 16 operated by AMTAB is the cheapest way to get from Bari to Bari Airport. Buses run at least every hour between Piazza Aldo Moro, near Bari Centrale Train Station, and the airport. The journey time is approximately 50 minutes as the bus has to make several stops. A one-way ticket costs EUR 1.00. You can buy tickets from the bus driver.

Another option is the Tempesta Autoservizi shuttle bus service, which runs on average once an hour, to and from Piazza Aldo Moro. The shuttle bus only stops at two stops, and the route is more direct than No. 16, thus the journey takes only 30 minutes. The one-way ticket costs EUR 4.00. Tickets can be purchased online and from the bus driver, children under 2 years ride for free.

Taxi

Uber is unavailable in Bari. It is also impossible in Italy to hail a taxi on the street. Therefore, to take a taxi to the airport, you will need either to walk to the nearest public taxi rank or to order taxi by phone calling one of the local taxi companies. The typical journey time from the city center of Bari to Karol Wojtyła Airport is 20-25 minutes and the ride will cost about EUR 25. Take in consideration that Italian taxi drivers - and especially in Southern Italy - normally speak only Italian, and - moreover - even phone operators will not always be able to speak English.
