About Bari
Bari is the capital of the Bari Metropolitan City and Apulia region on the Adriatic Sea in Southern Italy. After Naples, it is the second most important economic center on the continental part of Southern Italy. It is a port and university town, as well as the city of St. Nicholas. The city itself has 315,284 inhabitants in an area of 116 square kilometers, while the urban area has 750,000 inhabitants. The metropolitan area has 1.3 million residents.
Bari is made up of four distinct districts. To the north is the densely populated old town on the peninsula, between two modern ports, with the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the Cathedral of St. Sabino (1035-1171) and the Hohenstaufen Castle built for Frederick II. It is now also a major nightlife area. To the south is the Murat district (built by Joachim Murat), the modern heart of the city, laid out on a rectangular plan with the seaside promenade and the main shopping areas (Via Sparano and Via Argiro).
Modern residential areas around Bari city centre were built in the 1960s and 1970s to replace the older suburbs that developed along streets extending out from the city wall gates. In addition, the surrounding area developed rapidly in the 1990s. The city has a redeveloped airport, Karol Wojtyla Airport, which is connected to several European cities.
