About Rome

Rome is the capital of Italy. It is also the capital of the Lazio region, the center of the Roman metropolis and a special municipality called Comune di Roma Capitale. With 2.86 million inhabitants on an area of 1,285 square kilometers, Rome is the most populous city in the country and the third-largest city in the European Union in terms of population within city limits. With 4,4 million inhabitants, the Roman metropolis is the most populous metropolis in Italy. Its metropolitan area is the third most populous in Italy. Rome is located in Lazio (Latium) in the central west of the Italian peninsula, on the banks of the Tiber River. Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) is an independent state within the city limits of Rome, the only example of a state within a city. Rome is often referred to as the City of Seven Hills because of its location and is also known as the "Eternal City". Rome is often considered the "cradle of Western Christian culture and civilization" and the center of the Catholic Church.

The history of Rome spans 28 centuries. Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome to around 753 BC. The city's early population was a mixture of Latin, Etruscan and Sabines. Ultimately, the city became the capital of successive Roman Kingdoms, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire, and is considered by many to be the first imperial city and metropolis of all time. It was called the Eternal City (Urbs Aeterna in Latin) by the Roman poet Tiblos, and this expression was also used by Ovid, Virgil and Livy. Rome is also known as "Caput Mundi" (the capital of the world).

After the fall of the Western empire that marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, Rome slowly came under the political control of the Pope and became the capital of the Papal State in the 8th century, which lasted until 1870. Beginning with the Renaissance, nearly every pope since Nicholas V (1447-1455) pursued a coherent architectural and urban planning program for more than four hundred years, aimed at making the city a world center of art and culture. In this way, Rome became first one of the most important centers of the Renaissance and then the birthplace of Baroque and Neoclassicism. Famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects made Rome the center of their activities and created masterpieces throughout the city. Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1871 and the Italian Republic in 1946.

With 8.6 million tourists in 2019, Rome is the 14th most visited city in the world, the third most visited city in the European Union and the most popular tourist destination in Italy. Its historic center is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Rome is also the headquarters of several specialized agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. IFAD). ). The city also houses the Secretariat of the Parliament of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) as well as the headquarters of many international companies such as Eni, Enel, TIM, Leonardo S.p.A. and national and international banks such as Unicredit and BNL. Rome's EUR business district is home to many oil, pharmaceutical and financial services companies. The presence of international brands in the city has made Rome an important fashion and design hub, and the Cinecittà studio has been the location for many Oscar-winning films.

Getting from Rome to Fiumicino and Ciampino airports

There are two international airports serving the Italian capital: Leonardo da Vinci – Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA). To get from Rome to one of these airports, you can use train, bus, taxi, Uber or private transfer.

Train

Rome city centre is easily connected with Fiumicino Airport by Trenitalia railway services:

  • The Leonardo Express, non-stop service dedicated exclusively to airport passengers departs from Roma Termini train station every 15 minutes from 05:20 through 22:35, travel time is 32 minutes
  • The FL1 regional line trains from other Rome stations, with departures every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays

The railway connection with the Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) is less convenient, since there is no train station at the airport. From Roma Termini you should take the regional train to Ciampino station and from there you have to proceed by bus to the airport. The trains run from 5:30 am to 10:30 pm, every 30 minutes.

Bus

To reach Leonardo Da Vinci Fiumicino Airport you can use COTRAL bus service from Roma Termini train station. You can buy tickets at authorised sales outlets (newsagents, tobacconist’s, etc.) or on board the bus, subject to an additional charge.

Rome Ciampino Airport is connected with the city centre by several bus lines. The SitBus shuttle bus departs from Via Marsala 5 (next to Termini station). A one-way ticket costs 6 euros. Atral offers the same service, but is less expensive. It costs €1.20. A major drawback is that the buses are less frequent. Terravision shuttle buses connect Termini Train Station to Ciampino Airport in approximately 40 minutes.

Taxi

In Italy, you cannot just hail a taxi on the street. Therefore, to get by taxi from Rome to Fiumicino or Ciampino airport you should walk with your luggage to the nearest public taxi rank. Alternatively, you can call one of the local taxi companies and order a taxi to your address. Some knowledge of Italian language will be useful for you, since Italian cabbies usually do not speak English. Moreover, it is not always guaranteed that phone operators speak English, either.

There are fixed rates between Rome city centre (within the Aurelian Walls) and the airports: EUR 50 to Fiumicino Airport and EUR 30 to Ciampino Airport. However, don't be surprised if your taxi will arrive to you already with some euros on taximeter: Italian taxi drivers switch their taximeters on as soon as they receive a phone order, no matter where they are.

Uber

There is also Uber in Rome, but only in its Uber Black and Uber Lux versions. The approximate cost a ride from Rome city centre to Fiumicino Airport is about EUR 65 for Uber Black and about EUR 135 for Uber Lux; to Ciampino Airport it will cost about EUR 55 and EUR 92 respectively. Take in consideration however that these prices may vary essentially depending on the traffic conditions and demand. Be aware, that Italian Uber drivers normally do not speak English, either.

Private transfer

The most hassle-free option to get from Rome to Fiumicino Airport or to Ciampino Airport, especially if your accomodation is far away from Termini station or if you travel with heavy luggage, is a private door-to-door transfer. All what you need is to book and pre-pay your transfer in advance - just in a few clicks, online. Afterwards, your professional English-speaking driver will meet you straight at the doors of your accomodation, will help you with your luggage and will quickly drive you to Fiumicino Airport, Ciampino Airport, Port of Civitavecchia or to any other destination within the Lazio region or the whole Italy.
