About Catania
Catania is the second largest city in Sicily after Palermo and one of the top ten cities in Italy. It is located at the foot of Mount Etna on the east coast of Sicily, facing the Ionian Sea. The urban area has a population of 311,584, while the metropolitan Catania has a population of 1,107,702.
Catania was founded in the 8th century BC by the Chalcidian Greeks. The city has survived several geological disasters. In 1169, it was almost completely destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake. In 1669, a large eruption and lava flow near Mount Etna nearly flooded the city, and it was severely damaged by the 1693 Sicily earthquake.
During the 14th century and the Renaissance, Catania was one of the most important cultural, artistic and political centers in Italy. It was home to the first university in Sicily, founded in 1434. It has been the home or adopted home of some of Italy's most famous artists and writers, including composers Vincenzo Bellini and Giovanni Passini, as well as writers Giovanni Vega, Luigi Ca Puana, Federico de Roberto and Nino Matolio.
Catania is today the industrial, logistical and commercial center of Sicily. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is the largest airport in southern Italy. At the same time, Catania's central "Old Town" features a thriving late-Baroque architecture that emerged after the 1693 earthquake and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Taxi
In Italy you cannot hail a taxi on the street. Instead, you need to walk to the nearest public taxi rank. The vehicles used by the taxi service in the city of Catania are white and can be distinguished by the words "TAXI" on the roof and the identification number of the license plate on the door, rear and inside of the car. Alternatively, you can order your taxi by phone calling one of the local taxi companies.
Taxis in Catania use a taximeter to calculate fares based on travel time and distance. Good to know that taxi prices in Sicily vary depending on whether they travel during the day, night or weekend. A taxi from Catania city centre to Catania airport will cost around 25 euros during the day and around 28 euros for a night or weekend trip, depending on traffic. Additionally, Catania taxis charge a surcharge of EUR 1 per bag, which is then added to the total price.
Be aware, that almost nobody among Sicilian taxi drivers speaks English. Moreover, even the phone operators rarely speak English.
